El Azteca was a historic Tex-Mex restaurant in East Austin, known for its cabrito and other dishes, that operated for 53 years before closing in 2016. Founded by Jorge Guerra and his family in 1963, it became a fixture on East 7th Street, known for its comforting Tex-Mex staples and unique interior decorations like paintings of Aztec kings and a carved calendar. The restaurant’s closure was due to a combination of factors including rising property taxes, the sale of the property, and the Guerra family’s desire to retire.
