Flowers have played a key role in many traditions throughout history, from brides carrying bouquets at weddings to gifting flowers as an expression of sympathy. Many of the traditions around flowers that we hold dear started for a variety of reasons, some of which are very different from how they are used today.
What Are Corsages and Boutonnieres?
A corsage is a small flower arrangement that is usually worn by women in certain formal settings, either pinned to a gown or attached to the wrist with a ribbon. Boutonnieres are similar to corsages but are typically worn by men and either pinned to the front pocket or tucked through the buttonhole of a suit jacket.
Corsages and boutonnieres aren’t usually worn on their own. Typically, both members of a couple attending a dance, wedding, or other formal event will be wearing one or the other. This tradition was born out of an expression of romantic love and affection, but prom dates can still present corsages and boutonnieres to one another as friends.
When most people think of corsages and boutonnieres, images of prom dresses and tuxedos might come to mind. In fact, your prom may have been the last time you’ve seen a corsage or a boutonniere. However, these unique flower features have been used in multiple settings (and held various levels of significance) since they were first created.
Why were these flower arrangements created, and what is their significance today?
History of the Boutonniere
Long before boutonnieres were worn by male prom dates, they were worn by the ancient Aztecs and Egyptians at sporting events. The type of flower they would wear would symbolize which player or team they were supporting.
In 15th-century Europe, knights would go into battle wearing flowers or handkerchiefs given to them by the women who supported them. In some portions of European history, including the War of the Roses, different colored flowers came to symbolize various ruling families in the culture, which would affect the colors of flowers that knights would wear.
The boutonniere as we know it today rose to popularity in the 19th century, when modern suit jackets came into fashion. Men would wear single flowers or small bouquets tucked into their buttonholes for special occasions or simply as an everyday expression of style.
These small bouquets only became popular for prom as recently as the early 2000s, when it became commonplace for women attending prom to buy boutonnieres for their dates. Throughout history, boutonnieres have even been seen as a men’s popular accessory for Mother’s Day, the color of the flower indicating whether a mother was alive and well or had passed away.
History of the Corsage
In ancient Greece, wearing a small bundle of fragrant flowers was believed to help protect the wearer from evil spirits. This is why the corsage started as a traditional bridal garment, as the protective power of the flowers was thought to keep the bride and her family safe from harm as she embarked on her marriage.
Originally, corsages were worn on the bodice of a dress using a pin. In fact, the word “corsage” translates to “bodice” in French. Over time, the location of the flowers moved from the chest to the shoulder, where suitors could appropriately pin these bouquets onto their dates.
As corsages became popular to wear with prom dresses and spaghetti strapped or strapless dresses became fashionable, young ladies began wearing their corsages on their wrists using bracelets or tied ribbons. Some people wear corsages purely as a fashion statement outside of any romantic or traditional symbolism.
How to Choose Corsages and Boutonnieres
Traditionally, dates will purchase their corsages and boutonnieres for one another to be presented on the day of the special event. While many people will buy their own corsage or boutonniere these days, many couples still adhere to the traditions, especially for events like prom.
Choosing the right corsage or boutonniere for your date can be tricky, especially with so many flower types to choose from. The best way to go about it is to communicate what colors you’ll both be wearing so you can each choose a flower color that complements your outfits. In many cases, getting matching corsages and boutonnieres will create the most adhesive aesthetic and look great in photos.
Additionally, keep in mind that corsages and boutonnieres can be gifted among friends or family members. While this tradition may come from a romantic background, this type of symbolism is followed much more loosely today. Boutonnieres and corsages can be given to daughters by parents, between siblings, or simply between friends.
