A Brief History of Sweetest Day
Sweetest Day is an American holiday that was started in the early 1920s by a group of employees working at a candy company in Cleveland, Ohio. Inspired to create a day that was simply about spreading joy to those less fortunate, a committee of 12 people banded together to advertise and create the first Sweetest Day on October 10, 1921.
On this day, the committee handed out boxes of candy to more than 20,000 orphaned children, seniors, and poor families. Some Hollywood stars of the time, such as Ann Pennington and Theda Bara, took notice and helped distribute the candy on the day, which brought national attention to the first Sweetest Day.
Another significant Sweetest Day took place on October 19, 1940. The Sweetest Day committee at the time organized the distribution of over 10,000 boxes of sweets to 26 local charities in Cleveland and 600 candy boxes to Protestant, Jewish, and Catholic groups in New York.
While Sweetest Day was created as an opportunity to brighten the days of poor or bereft members of the community, it evolved over the years into a celebration of love, friendship, and appreciation within all kinds of relationships. Sweetest Day is a national holiday, but its celebration is still most prevalent in Ohio and the surrounding states, including Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
